New opportunities come with new challenges

As a kid I liked trying new things (except vegetables). I was open to trying new sports, meeting new people and experiencing new adventures. As I got older, I started to resist change. I didn’t like traveling because I hated leaving my normal routines, I enjoyed going to the same beaches because the waves were familiar so I could surf them more predictably I even chose the video games I was the best at because I knew I could beat them.

Newness, brings unknown challenges and that can be terrifying.

Most of the work that I do is commercial in its application. Whether it’s a documentary style short to be used for social media marketing or a thirty-second commercial meant for broadcast airwaves. I have been making commercial content since I graduated college back in 2001, so I am very familiar with the purpose and process of client driven video work.

Recently, we were offered an opportunity to work on a TV show series set to launch on Fall 2019 primetime slots in Hawaii. Even though it is still fundamentally the same type of content that we produce for our existing clients, it is fundamentally different because there is no client. I’m no longer building a piece of branding for a business to purchase, I’m now making entertaining, education content in hopes that it could build a more sustainable of Hawaii. It is both terrifying and invigorating to work on a project that has so much creative freedom and flexibility.

We are in the process of finalizing the pilot episode and getting it ready to screen for the TV station to see if it is something worthy of their network.

This is definitely not an opportunity I was looking for, but when it fell in my lap, I had an inkling that it was something I had to try. Even if nothing comes of the series, I’m proud of the work that the team has accomplished and am so glad that I embraced this challenge.
