Filmmaking is an industry driven by technology… and because we are so dependent upon gear, it’s easy to get overly excited about deals and gadgets. Even though we were all trying to “Spark Joy” by thanking our items and finding them a new home a few months ago, many of us have returned to our old patterns of consumer-driven spending habits. I’m as guilty as the next guy, but who can resist a good “sale” day… especially one driven by the largest retailer in America… Amazon Prime Day!

I am always tempted by the “I’ve been wanting that” mindset but there are a few things that as filmmakers we rely on more than the average consumer.

Media

Media is the lifeblood of image and video capture. So we are constantly on the look out for more storage. Whether it’s SD, CF or CFast cards to record to our cameras or HDD, SSD and RAID systems we use to back up and edit our captures from. Over time and repetitious use, media gets worn down and thus less reliable, so I am always on the look out for more media solutions. Some of the deals I often find on Amazon are for SDHC/Micro SD cards and SSD media.
