I come from a family of storytellers

Today was day full of family matters. Joanne and I had a quick appointment in the morning, followed by a couple hours back at home before spending some time at Barnes and Noble in Ala Moana to celebrate a book launch with my Aunty Jan Iwase.

Aunty spent much of her life teaching others. She was an educator for most of her career and retired as the Principal of Daniel K Inouye Elementary School (formerly Hale Kula Elementary). She also spent much of her spare time coaching her sons in soccer or tennis or whatever else they needed to learn and was even one of my first soccer coaches as a kid.

Upon retiring last year, Aunty set out to accomplish another long-time goal of hers… to write a book. She recently published and released her first book “Leading with Aloha, From the Pineapple Fields to the Principal’s Office.” We all gathered with her today, to celebrate with her at her very first book signing. It was a lot of fun seeing others rally around aunty and encourage her in the success of her book launch.

There are a lot of great writers in my family and I’m excited to read the work of another creative in our Amemiya Ohana.
