15 Aug Test before you commit
So the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6k is here and I finally got to play with it this morning.
Rather than just trying to find something around the office to shoot at, I decided to connect with Jody Kamisato to see if he wanted to be the subject of a little camera test. He jumped at the opportunity and within 24 hours, we were ready to shoot. I had originally hoped to shoot at sunrise, but decided to forgo the actual rising of the sun and push our start time back an hour to give our scene a little time to lighten up a little. We shot to Sandy Beach at 7am and shot Jody jamming a song he wrote years ago called 12th Avenue.
It’s a fast past strum heavy track and really get’s the energy flowing.
I originally had purchased this camera in hopes of bringing with us on our trip to Japan, but after some initial testing, I think I’ve decided against bringing the 6k in favor of of the Blackmagic Pocket 4k. One of the biggest reasons is post production. Currently, there is no way of getting the 6k or 5.7k footage into premiere, and I really don’t want to edit this entire project in DaVinci. Not only are we unfamiliar with the DaVinci editor, but we’ve already started compiling the project in Premiere… but that’s why you do tests before using any new tech on a live, paid gig. It’s never a good idea to learn on a client’s time and with your credibility at stake. If I am able to figure out a workaround in Premiere or if BRaw Studio releases an update soon, I may re-consider the 6k, but for now it seems to be a wiser decision to shoot with what has worked in the past than try a new fancy camera that may not work for our purposes.
Big shout out to Brady Huf for the rad assist on BTS (Behind the Scenes) capture. More camera tests coming soon.
