15 Oct Getting systems in place for life
So here’s the thing… I’ve always been messy. My mom will tell you when I was growing up, my room was mostly a mess. She tried a lot of things to help us keep our rooms organized, things like making our laundry hamper a basketball hoop, bought us fun linens and comforters so we would make our bed and shelves and desks to keep our school work tidy. Most of the things I cared about were in order… I would make sure all my baseball, football, basketball, X-Men, and Garbage Pail cards were in order, all my comics were in plastic sleeves with backing boards and my pogs were systematically organized in bins and boxes. But my drawers, under my bed, and the inside of my closets were a mess. I would do my best to keep the visible things tidy when people were around, but I never built a system to keep it that way, so nothing was ever in its place… except my collectables of course.
I think that’s the way I’ve always done things in life… from the exterior, things look like they should, and most of the main components of my business are always taken care of but the little things are always in a little bit of chaos. I could definitely use a great tutorial on keeping the tasks, to dos and assignments a bit more organized and aligned. I’ll admit that I was one of the first people to start watching “Tidying up with Marie Kondo” on Netflix and to purchase both of her audio books… and I’ve definitely tried to make small behavioral changes in hopes of big effects, but I often find myself back to where I started with disorganized thoughts and a laundry list of tasks that never seem to get completed.
But that is about to change! I hope…
About a year ago I recorded a podcast with Hawaii filmmaker and entrepreneur Kolby Moser owner of Aria Studios and founder of Aria Children’s Fund. During our conversation, I learned about a life and business transforming book called “The Emyth Revisited.” It’s a book that Kolby highly recommended and said helped her transform her business of project to project stress to a sustainable, profitable, understandable business with structure, boundaries and joy. Those are things I strive to build into Berad Studio, so that I can lead this company rather than it leading my life.
A big part of that life change will happen as I build systems and structure into my life and schedule, proactively thinking about tasks I need to accomplish every given day rather than reactively responding to every notification that pops up on my phone or in my brain. It is so easy for me to get distracted with messages and to dos that I spend much of the “work day” getting almost nothing accomplished and that is a quick way for a business to spiral out of control. 2020 is going to bring a lot of new changes to our team and to our business, so setting up these systems now is one of my top priorities.
Wish me luck!
