Luggage woes and wandering

Traveling is awesome, but getting to and from our final destinations can sometimes be the less than exciting… and one of the majorly minor details of travel is the luggage we pack everything in. For years I thought of luggage as something disposable… something that would likely break or wear down every few years and that was before I actually traveled a lot.

Now that travel is becoming a pretty regular part of my work/personal life, the luggage I use to transport my life across the world is a lot more important. I’ve mostly owned suitcases by Samsonite and they’ve all worked fine with the above mentioned caveat of expecting them to fail after a few years. But just over a year ago, my large suitcase’s wheel broke on day one of our two week trip to Italy… and it’s partner carry-on suitcase broke in Sapporo a few months later. So I’ve been on the hunt for some new luggage for half a year now and don’t think I’m much closer to a resolution.

Over the last three to five years, luggage has become a trendy item to own and care about, becoming somewhat of a status symbol and with it’s growing popularity, everyone is trying to get their piece of the travel pie.
I’ve considered all the usual suspects from Away to TravelPro and premium brands like Tumi and Rimowa… but I still haven’t pulled the trigger. There are some new players like Speck Travel who are getting in on the action too.

I’m still unsure of what the final decision will be, but I’m really leaning toward the Speck or Away luggage.
