Do you really need a gimbal to vlog?

Technology comes and goes, but one piece of kit that has really invaded every level of video production is the 3-axis gimbal stabilizer.  I’ve used them with iPhones, drones, Red cameras and now fixed camera gimbals like the DJI Osmo Pocket.  Gimbals allow you to get extremely smooth and steady shots that were traditionally reserved for Hollywood’s high budget productions.  Now, everything from weddings and events to music videos and feature films use these tech tools.

The DJI Osmo Pocket is a $350 camera stabilizer with a built-in 4k camera that shoots 24p, 30p and 60p… something that all current cinema cameras attempt to do and only few succeed in.  The Osmo Pocket uses the same camera and sensor technology based on the original DJI Mavic Drone which has been tried and tested in the wind and elements.  It is a solid option for anyone looking for a basic camera + video camera hybrid and includes a great, rear-facing microphone that is quite usable for vlog style content.  I can’t wait for version 2 of this system.  If they make a pro version that includes the Hasselblad camera in the DJI Mavic 2 Pro, it’ll definitely be a worthy upgrade.
