MAY DAY IS LEI DAY IN HAWAII

Not a spring went by growing up, when I didn’t hear mom say: “April showers bring May flowers….” and it’s a gentle reminder of my mother every May first..

Here on May 1, 2021, we could definitely use some of those metaphorical flowers around the world. There has been so much death and destruction in the last year, and we aren’t quite out of the woods just yet. Businesses are still in shambles, millions are out of work or on government assistance without a real positive outlook. Death is always the predecessor for life and boy do we need some life, some hope, some peace…

I am eternally thankful that Berad Studio is still running, that my wife is still working (in a job that allows her to work from home), our son is a happy, healthy, 13 month old and things for us honestly haven’t changed all that much for us (relatively speaking).

But I still think we’re on the lookout for some May flowers to bloom around the state and around the world, bringing a fresh new aroma of life and joy.

I’m reminded of a video (one of my first ever projects for Hawaiian Airlines) that we produced where we went to Sydney, Australia, San Francisco and Tokyo, Japan to give out lei to random people walking by. We gave out over 10,000 just to share a little aloha with the world.

May 1 is also “May Day” here in Hawaii and the giving and receiving of lei is a very common activity (when we are not being socially distant).
